US Supreme Court stays subpoena in Capitol investigation

The US Supreme Court has barred the commission of inquiry into the storming of the Capitol from accessing the phone records of a close confidante of former US President Trump. It concerns the head of the Republican party organization in Arizona, Kelli Ward.

The US Congress commission of inquiry wants to investigate Ward’s telephone traffic in the run-up to the storm. They see the supporter of ex-President Trump as a spider in the web during the storming and occupation of Parliament on January 6 last year.

Ward had unsuccessfully contested the commission’s subpoena in several courts. She eventually went to the Supreme Court, where a chief justice ruled that the phone records did not need to be released for the time being.

The researchers had requested Ward’s text and call data from November 1, 2020 to January 30, 2021. According to the commission, it has repeatedly tried to make the counting of votes in presidential elections more difficult.

Ward’s attorneys argue that the subpoena violated the fundamental rights of party members who communicated with her at the time.

Trump also complained

Former President Trump himself was also summoned to the investigation. He is also expected to refuse to cooperate.

Last week, the commission said there was “overwhelming evidence” that Trump “personally orchestrated” the day’s events by spreading the false accusation that there had been widespread fraud in the presidential election two months earlier.
