When he heard that he was being sought, he immediately called the police himself.

Corey Hastings, 30, was taken into custody on three counts of assault and “being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.” The Australian had to appear in court on Thursday morning.

As the news portal Australian Broadcasting Company reports, the judge has decided not to release Hastings for the time being. However, due to an administrative error, his documents incorrectly stated that he could leave – and so the New South Wales State Penitentiary Authority released him.

Advertised for search

Only a short time later did officials notice the embarrassing mistake. And so they started the search for the 30-year-old on Thursday evening. They suspected he traveled on public transportation and visited a shopping center near the prison. However, they could not find him on site.

Unable to find Hastings, authorities placed him on a wanted list. The search for the scammer was announced on Australian television and in the media. Eyewitnesses were asked to contact police immediately if they had any information.

Knacki called from the hotel

And the police actually got a tip – from Corey Hastings himself. He called and said he heard on TV about the search for him. He also told officers he was at a hotel near Bondi Beach.

After the call, the police could simply walk past the hotel and take the 30-year-old back. It remains to be seen whether the inmate will receive a reduced sentence for his information. The authorities now want to investigate how the administrative error could have arisen. (obf)
