After losing his defamation case against American author E. Jean Carroll, former US President Donald Trump has paid a bail amount of more than 90 million dollars in court. A court document published on Friday shows that the 77-year-old has deposited the equivalent of more than R78 million and is simultaneously appealing the verdict.

In a second civil case, a court ordered Trump to pay Carroll $83.3 million (about 73 million Swiss francs) in damages. A New York jury had proven that Trump attacked Carroll in a luxury New York department store in 1996, sexually assaulted him and later defamed him. The jury then initially awarded the writer compensation of five million dollars (about 4.4 million francs). Trump has also appealed this decision. Trump now had to deposit the money in court – along with an additional amount based on court remedies and interest.

Trump will most likely be the Republican candidate and challenger to US President Joe Biden in the presidential elections scheduled for November. However, he is currently dealing with the courts in many different cases. He was also recently found guilty in a fraud trial and must pay more than 450 million dollars (about 394 million francs).
