Hundreds of Bundeswehr soldiers arrived in Lithuania with their military vehicles for a maneuver on NATO’s eastern flank. According to military information, the Jägerbataillon 91 convoy crossed the Polish-Lithuanian border on Thursday and reached the Baltic EU and NATO country. “Welcome to Lithuania!” wrote the Lithuanian army on the X platform (formerly Twitter). The battle group, which consists of 700 soldiers and approximately 200 vehicles, was moved 1,200 kilometers overland from their locations in Germany to Lithuania, where a Bundeswehr armored brigade will be permanently stationed in the future.
According to the Bundeswehr, the target is the Lithuanian military base in Pabrade. There, the German soldiers would participate in the NATO exercise series “Steadfast Defender”. In total, about 90,000 troops are being mobilized within the alliance for the large-scale maneuver in response to the security policy situation against the backdrop of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. It is the largest NATO exercise in decades. Germany is participating in this with a number of its own exercises under the name ‘Quadriga’. (sda/dpa)
