“I thought, that’s it – I’m going to die,” Lee Ann Galante, 55, of Butler Township, Pennsylvania, told NBC News. With a lot of luck she survived a bear attack. The horror attack did not happen during a walk in the mountains, but in her own garden.
Actually, she just wanted to walk her dog, Smokie. But as soon as he ran into the yard, he started barking loudly. Galante looked to see why Smokie was so nervous.
Then she saw three young black bear cubs in a nearby treetop. And it was immediately clear to her: it was dangerous. Because: The mother bear had to be nearby. That’s when the bear attacked. “Out of the darkness, this big bear just jumped the fence,” Galante said.
Bite wound to the head and a broken nose
Smokie would have been very close to the bear, so Galante started shouting his name loudly. The bear immediately pounced on Galante. “She bit the back of my head so hard I thought she was going to scalp me.” The mother bear also bit her left arm. Then the animal let go.
Galante and Smokie immediately took advantage of the opportunity and fled into the house through a back door. The woman immediately alerted the emergency services. Emergency services took the seriously injured woman to hospital. There, doctors discovered: Galante had a bite wound on the back of his head, a broken nose, cuts in his mouth, a wound on his arm and abrasions and scratches.
Bear was euthanized
“I always thought, ‘I can’t believe this is happening. That can’t happen. “I’m being attacked by a bear,” Galante says. Police found the young animals in another treetop in the area. The bear was still aggressive and therefore emergency services put the animal to sleep. According to police, their cubs are being released back into the wild at an unknown location.
Galante is just happy that her dog escaped with only a few scratches on his back. “He was constantly distracting her. I’m so grateful he wasn’t really hurt.” A few days earlier, a neighbor of Galante had already seen a family of bears. (mgf)
