Nikki Haley withdraws from the US presidential race. The Republican announced this at a press conference in her home state of South Carolina. With their withdrawal, Donald Trump is the only remaining Republican candidate.
As expected, Haley refrained from fully endorsing Trump in her speech, as previous candidates Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy had done. “I congratulate him and wish him the best. As I do with anyone who wants to become president of our country,” Haley said. She does not advise her voters to blindly follow Trump. “He has to earn our trust,” she said.
No chance of “Super Tuesday” either.
Haley’s withdrawal comes as no surprise. The former South Carolina governor lost to Trump in the party’s Super Tuesday primaries in more than a dozen US states. The 52-year-old has only won in Washington and Vermont so far; she had no chance in the other states, not even in her home country of South Carolina. In Nevada, it even received fewer votes than the “none of these candidates” option.
The Republican once worked as UN ambassador under Donald Trump, but she did not hesitate to criticize the former US president. Recently, she repeatedly publicly doubted Trump’s mental fitness, calling both him and Biden a “grumpy old man.” The political views of the two also differ – for example on the Ukraine issue, in which Haley, unlike Trump, supports arms deliveries.

With Haley’s resignation, it is now clear that Donald Trump will enter the presidential race as the official Republican candidate. Despite the ongoing procedures and his boycott of TV debates, the ex-president was clearly leading in the party’s internal polls.
