Vicente (63) and Fernanda’s (28) motorcycle trip around the world is overshadowed by a terrible incident in India: outside the town of Dumka, the couple is attacked in their tent, several men attack Fernanda and rape her – Vicente has to watch helplessly. After the crime, the couple reported on their Instagram.
The crime caused a stir in the country, with demonstrations demanding harsh punishment for the perpetrators. Police have now arrested a total of eight men and presented them to the press. The police then published photos on social media.
“I ask for justice for all women”
The men wear black hoods, are handcuffed and are paraded on ropes by the police. Fernanda then wrote on Instagram: “They arrested eight men. The police worked incredibly quickly and efficiently. I ask for justice for all women who have experienced the same thing as me.”
Shortly after the crime, the couple showed astonishing generosity: the incident would not tarnish their positive memories of India. ‘Don’t think that India is like that, because that’s not true. India is a country with many good people, a great country.”
Violence against women is widespread in India. According to official figures, almost 90 rapes were reported per day in 2022. Due to the stigmatization of victims and a lack of confidence in the police and the judiciary, many cases are not reported at all. Convictions for rape remain rare and trials often drag on for years.
Several brutal cases in recent years
In 2012, the brutal gang rape of an Indian student in New Delhi caused horror around the world. 23-year-old Jyoti Singh was attacked, raped and assaulted with an iron rod by five men and a teenager on a bus. The men then threw their seriously injured victim out of the bus. The young woman later died in a hospital from her injuries.
A 2013 gang rape of a then 39-year-old Swiss woman was similar: she was also traveling with her husband, was attacked and raped in a tent, while her husband was tied up by the perpetrators. (neo)
