This week will be a big triumph for Donald Trump (77). Even before he was expected to win the Republican primaries in fifteen American states on Super Tuesday against Nikki Haley (52), the top judges gave him a big gift on Monday.
They overturned a ruling by Colorado’s highest court, which sought to remove him as a presidential candidate because of his role in the storming of the Capitol. It is a coup that was foreseeable – not least because Trump had already taken precautions during his time in office. The highest court in the US consists of nine judges – three Democrats and six Republicans – three of whom were appointed by Trump.
Ruling groundbreaking for several states
The court had to decide whether Trump could be excluded from the election “as an oath breaker.” The judges elegantly avoided this particular question. Instead, they pondered technical questions, such as whether the provisions of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which can bar politicians from presidential elections, also apply to a current president.
This avoidance of the actual question is probably due, among other things, to the fact that a conviction would have caused unrest throughout the country. Even the Democratic judges voted in favor of Trump and delivered a unanimous verdict. They defended themselves this way: “If Colorado were to allow this, it would result in a chaotic patchwork of states that violate the principles of our nation’s federalism.”
The Supreme Court’s ruling causes a domino effect. Similar charges and verdicts in Maine and Illinois fizzled out. The other states where there were allegations of rioting can also destroy the files.
Haley hopes for Stormy Daniels
Trump, who greeted the verdict with “Great victory for America!!!” celebrates, there should be no more legal obstacles standing in the way of a candidacy – except one. Of the 91 charges he faces, porn star Stormy Daniels, 44, is the only one who could pose a threat to him before the November 5 election. It is the only case for which a trial date has been announced and a negative ruling could affect the candidate’s candidacy. On March 25, a New York court will investigate whether Trump falsified business documents related to hush money payments.
An adverse Supreme Court ruling was essentially the final straw for Nikki Haley. The only thing that can now help her run for office against incumbent Joe Biden (81) is Trump’s absence due to illness – or a porn star.
