Weather conditions are tense in the north of Italy. This is due to persistent and enormous snowfall. On Monday morning, the municipality of Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley announced the closure and precautionary partial evacuation of the Val Ferret valley. This was reported by the Italian news agency Ansa. People who expressly want to stay on site are not allowed to leave their home. Other areas were also closed.
In the municipality of Gaby, in the Lystal, an avalanche broke out and blocked a road tunnel, as “Merkur” reports. The regional road was subsequently closed. The municipalities of Gressoney-Saint-Jean and Gressoney-La Trinité are affected. Thousands are cut off from the outside world. Clearance services are battling the snow masses.
“Specialists are monitoring the situation”
According to Francesco Valerio, the mayor of Gaby, no one was injured. “The avalanche situation is monitored 24 hours a day by specialists.” There was also a major power outage in the municipality of Gressoney that night. An alarm has been issued for the entire area on the border with Switzerland and France.
The federal government also warned of avalanche danger in Switzerland on Monday, especially in the south. The situation in the mountains is sometimes critical due to heavy rainfall and fresh snow. Last weekend several people were killed by avalanches. Further information about the weather in Switzerland can be found in our ticker. (dmo)
