In his first apartment, Paul B. forgot to register the electricity for three years.

When Paul B.* (30) moves into his first apartment of 45 square meters in Munich, it is nice and warm and homely. “Warm means warm,” thought the young man from Lower Saxony, as “Bild” reports. In other words: electricity must be included in the rental price of 960 euros. No one came to correct him for three years.

When the Munich resident realizes his mistake, he makes a TikTok about it – and causes a huge chain reaction. “Why doesn’t anyone tell you that when you move into a new apartment, you have to apply for electricity yourself?” he asks while making a sandwich in his kitchen.

Video goes viral

His video is shared millions of times. Many users sympathize with him. One woman says: “When I got my first apartment, that’s what I thought too! One day I wake up and the power is gone. After an hour I knew why.”

But it is not only positive and understanding comments that await the 30-year-old. ‘Lord, let it rain brains. Some people just don’t have a plan for life,” said one user. Another tackles the matter with humor and writes: “Huh, that’s in the mail?”

He has to pay for the electricity

Munich’s municipal utilities are embarrassed by the incident. After also seeing the viral video, they contacted Paul. A “vacancy” was registered for his apartment. In a telephone conversation they explained to him that this had probably not been checked because of Corona and the overload due to the brake on the electricity price.

Paul must pay an additional bill for electricity consumption during the three years. During this time he received approximately 1,800 kilowatt hours for free. At first, Paul was afraid that he would not be able to pay the bill of 500 euros. “I had no idea how much electricity cost and I was really afraid that I would now have to file for personal bankruptcy.” But he can easily pay out the money through his Tiktok video alone: thanks to the many clicks, he has already earned 1,000 euros.
