Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urgently called for more support from the West in the fight against Russia. In his video address on Sunday evening, he referred to the civilians killed and injured in the latest Russian attacks over the weekend. At least twelve people were killed in Odessa on the Black Sea alone; 16 people were injured in Kurachowe in the east of the country.
“No state in Europe could have withstood this pressure and this evil on its own,” Zelensky said, referring to further Russian attacks in recent days.
All leading politicians and international organizations must respond harshly to the actions of Russia and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. “Putin doesn’t want peace – he only wants war and death,” Zelensky said. “He doesn’t care who he kills, his main goal is destruction – Ukraine and Ukrainians first. And then you, dear partners.”
Zelensky continued: “Therefore, it is a matter of survival – and not only for Ukraine – that the world responds to Russian evil and strikes back.” The war must become hopeless for Russia. “Russian evil must not be encouraged by weak decisions, delivery delays or indecisiveness.”
The death toll in Odessa continues to rise
After the serious Russian drone attack on Saturday evening, the number of deaths in the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa rose to twelve. The bodies of two children, a 10-year-old boy and his eight-year-old sister, were recovered from the rubble on Sunday, Odessa region Governor Oleh Kiper said in Telegram on Sunday.
A few hours earlier, Kiper said the bodies of a woman and a baby had been recovered from the rubble. The child was less than a year old. This brings the number of children killed in this attack in Odessa to five. The Russian drone crashed into a nine-storey residential building in the Black Sea port city.
Sixteen injured in Russian attack on city in eastern Ukraine
According to initial reports, at least sixteen people were injured on Sunday afternoon in a Russian attack on the city of Kurakhove in southeastern Ukraine. The guided aircraft bomb damaged several houses in the city in the Donetsk region, Ukraine’s Unian agency reported. The condition of two injured people was described as critical. Russia has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine for two years. Residential areas repeatedly come under indiscriminate fire from Russian artillery or fighter jets.
Zelensky: Russia loses seven fighter jets in one week
According to Zelensky, Ukrainian air defenses shot down seven Russian fighter jets last week. According to the General Staff in Kiev, the Russian air force has lost 348 aircraft and 325 helicopters since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine. The information could not be independently verified. Moscow itself does not provide information about its own losses.
Heavy fighting continues in Ukrainian parts of the front
Russian and Ukrainian troops are once again engaged in heavy fighting on several parts of the front in eastern and southern Ukraine. The General Staff in Kiev announced in its situation report in the evening that 68 battles had been registered on Sunday. Especially in the east, Russian units tried several times to advance towards Kupjansk and Limansk. The attacks were repulsed, the report said. (rbu/sda/dpa)
