Republican Donald Trump has continued his victory in his party’s US presidential elections. As expected, the former president and current presidential candidate won internal party votes in the states of Missouri and Idaho on Saturday (local time).

The Republican Party in Missouri officially declared Trump the winner on Saturday evening (local time) after all votes were counted and announced that the 77-year-old had won every district in the state. He received 100 percent of the votes.

According to predictions from CNN and NBC, Trump has also clearly won in Idaho. NBC reported that after about 60 percent of the votes were counted, the ex-president achieved a result of more than 84 percent. The only remaining party competitor – former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley – received almost 14 percent of the vote.

Missouri is located in the center of the country and has approximately six million inhabitants. Idaho is located in the northwest of the US and has approximately two million inhabitants. In both states, voting did not take place in the traditional manner at polling stations, but rather at small party gatherings – so-called caucus meetings.

So far, Trump is undefeated

Trump has so far won all the votes in his party’s primaries for the fall presidential election. Haley failed to win a vote. It is unclear how long the 52-year-old will remain in the race, as she will effectively no longer have a chance to beat Trump. Despite various scandals, escapades and a chaotic term as president, your competitor has strong support among the party base.

Republican primaries will follow in the coming days, initially in the Capital District of Washington and the state of North Dakota, before the next major milestone in the election year takes place on Tuesday: ‘Super Tuesday’ with voting in more than a dozen states. Both Trump and Haley campaigned this weekend in states that will vote on Super Tuesday.

Anyone who wants to become a presidential candidate in the US must first win in the parties’ internal primaries. The candidates are then officially chosen at party conferences in the summer. The Republican nominating convention will take place in mid-July. The actual presidential elections will take place in early November. For the Democrats, incumbent President Joe Biden wants to run for a new term. He has no serious competition in his party’s internal race. Everything currently indicates that Biden and Trump will eventually compete against each other again. (sda/dpa)
