A study by the vignette provider “Vignetteswitzerland.com” examined a total of 32 European countries and shows how safe their roads are. Blick has put together the top 5 of the most dangerous and safest.

Portugal
Portugal ranks fifth in the study: with 62.3 road deaths per million inhabitants in 2022, the country on the Iberian Peninsula is just ahead of Greece. However, compared to 2012, Portugal registered an improvement of around 8.5 percent.
Croatia
The “Land of the 1000 Islands” will record approximately 71.2 road deaths per million inhabitants in 2022, placing it in fourth place. In 2012 there were almost 92 traffic fatalities per million inhabitants. The percentage difference is approximately 22.5.
Bulgaria
Bulgaria ranks third with 77.6 road fatalities per million inhabitants and shows the smallest change compared to 2012. With 82.6 road fatalities per million inhabitants, there is only 6 percent between the two values.
Serbia
Serbia comes in second place with 82.6 road deaths per million inhabitants, a decrease of 13 percent compared to 2012.
Romania
Romania is in first place and is right behind Serbia. Nearly 86 road deaths per million inhabitants and a difference of 10 percent compared to 2012 make the country the most dangerous in European road traffic.

Switzerland
Switzerland ranks 28th and is in the top 5 safest roads in Europe. With 27.5 traffic fatalities per million inhabitants, we have a decrease of 35 percent compared to 2012, when there were 42.6 traffic fatalities per million inhabitants.
Denmark
With 26.2 road deaths per million inhabitants, the Scandinavian country is just ahead of Switzerland. In 2012, Denmark reached a rate of almost 30 road deaths per million inhabitants.
United Kingdom
The 30th place belongs to Great Britain with 25.8 road deaths per million inhabitants. With a difference of about 9 percent, the famous kingdom was once again considered one of the safest countries in Europe in terms of road traffic in 2012.
Sweden
Sweden took 31st place and is clearly ahead of Great Britain with around 21.7 road deaths per million inhabitants. However, Sweden has improved enormously compared to 2012 – with a decrease of 27 percent compared to 2012.
Norway
The safest country in Europe when it comes to road traffic is Norway. In 2022, only 21.3 road deaths per million inhabitants were counted, compared to 29 in 2012. Norway is at the top with a difference of 26 percent, making it particularly safe for many motorists.
