40 days after the death of young Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini, police in Tehran used tear gas against a demonstration of doctors.

Iranians protest the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in Tehran on September 20, 2022 after she was arrested by vice squad.

The doctors demonstrated on Wednesday against the presence of security forces in the clinics, where participants in the protests are also treated. Eyewitnesses confirmed a massive presence of police officers and checkpoints on Tehran’s main streets. Many shops were closed for fear of riots.

The trigger for the systemic mass protests in Iran was the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini. The vice squad arrested her for allegedly violating the Islamic dress code. The woman died on September 16 in police custody. Since her death, thousands across the country have demonstrated against the government’s repressive course and Islamic rule system.

Meanwhile, in Amini’s hometown, many people gathered at her grave. In Iran, people traditionally mourn the death of a family member for 40 days. Police and security authorities have closed many routes in the town of Saghes. Schools in the Kurdish province were closed on Wednesday – officially due to a flu epidemic. Observers, on the other hand, say the closures were intended to prevent protests. (sda/dpa)
