The planned execution of a convicted serial killer in the US state of Idaho was halted at the last minute due to medical problems.
As the local correctional authority announced on Wednesday, the medical team was unable to grant the 73-year-old access needed for the lethal injection. Therefore, the execution of the death sentence was stopped after about an hour.
Due to the complications, the enforceable title lapses. The convicted man was therefore returned to his cell. “The state will investigate next steps,” the authority said.
Executions have often failed
The death sentence was imposed after the now 73-year-old beat his cellmate to death with a sock full of batteries in 1981. At the time, he was already in prison for five other murders. The convict himself claims to have committed dozens of murders. His execution would have been the first in the state of Idaho in twelve years.
Executions in the US have failed repeatedly in recent years. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, there were usually problems inserting the intravenous line through which the lethal drugs were administered. (AP)
