Rapper Saman Yasin, who was imprisoned in Iran, has called on the Iranian judiciary to sentence him to death. This is reported by radio station Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. In the past, Yasin, who was arrested in 2022 during nationwide protests against the mullahs’ regime, said he was physically and psychologically tortured in prison.

According to the report, Yasin posted a letter on Instagram from prison. The BBC broadcaster Persia published the letter. In it, Yasin writes: “Please give me the death penalty. I have no objection and agree. Take my life, deliver it.”

The case must be retried

Saman Yasin rapped about inequality, oppression and unemployment. He was accused of ‘war against God’, for which the Revolutionary Court in the capital Tehran sentenced him to death last year. However, the musician appealed against this. The Supreme Court agreed and overturned the verdict. Yasin’s case should therefore actually be reheard.

Yasin is not the first prisoner to make allegations of torture against authorities: jailed rapper Toomaj Salehi did so too. After Salehi was briefly released, a court sentenced him to prison again early this year.

The death of women’s rights activist Mahsa Amini sparked a nationwide wave of protests against the Islamic mullah regime in Iran in 2022. 22-year-old Amini died after arrest by the vice police. Hundreds of people were killed and tens of thousands arrested during the demonstrations.
