There are only two perfectly preserved hockey trading cards left in the world from hockey legend Wayne Gretzky’s (63) rookie season in 1979. They are considered the Holy Grail among collectors: one of the cards sold a few years ago for as much as $3.75 million auctioned.
Now everything has changed in the world of collectors. Because there could be a lot more than just these two cards: A man’s family in Canada discovered a box in the basement full of unopened hockey trading cards from 1979. The box was one of many, as the man was in his 60s. and 70s was an avid collector.
Experts estimate that there are not just one or two, but up to 27 Wayne Gretzky rookie cards hidden inside. The dusty box sat in the Regina home for decades. The family didn’t care and thought the cards were from 1980 because they were written that way on the outside in felt-tip pen. He himself had forgotten that he had bought it at the time.
More than 10,000 cards from 1979
The box has now been auctioned for a whopping $3.72 million. According to the Guardian, the Texas auction house called it the “greatest unopened find of the 21st century.” The buyer, who wishes to remain anonymous, will receive the box containing 48 smaller, unopened boxes full of hockey trading cards. There are 10,752 cards in there – and probably one or two Gretzky cards.
But: It’s unlikely whoever opened the boxes they bought at auction, expert Jason Simonds told the New York Times. Maybe the person drinks a few beers and opens one of the smaller boxes out of curiosity, he says. “But it’s unlikely.”
Reason: Unopened boxes are an investment that will increase in value over time. And on the other hand, unopened boxes would have nostalgic value for some collectors.
Simonds told CBC the family was overjoyed with the sale. “The family is ecstatic, this is life-changing money.” And the auction house gives all residents of the US and Canada another tip: “Search your basements and attics!” (neo)
