Jam Master Jay, born in 1965, became world famous in the 1980s as DJ of the legendary rap band Run-DMC. His death puzzled investigators for decades.

The trial of the two suspects started in January. The men are accused of shooting the musician in October 2002 at a music studio in the New York borough of Queens. The suspect and the murdered man, whose real name was Jason Mizell, were all from the same New York area and were friends. The musician was also the godfather of one of the men.

According to prosecutors, Jam Master Jay increasingly trafficked in cocaine as his musical success declined. When a dispute arose with the now convicted persons about the distribution of the drug trade, they hatched a murder plot against Jam Master Jay, according to the Public Prosecution Service.

The death penalty had already been ruled out before the trial. A third man is also accused, but his trial will take place separately in 2026. (sda/dpa)
