After Donald Trump (77) was fined more than $350 million in a fraud trial, the ex-president’s lawyers appealed. According to official databases, they submitted the relevant documents to the court on Monday.
The civil case concerned the future of Trump’s business empire. Prosecutors accused Trump, his sons and employees of manipulating the value of the Trump Organization for years to obtain cheaper loans and insurance contracts. Judge Arthur Engoron agreed before the trial started last year – and then decided about ten days ago that the former US president had to pay a fine of around $355 million. In addition, the real estate entrepreneur is not allowed to operate a business in New York state for three years.
Immediately afterwards, Trump described the order as “complete and total hypocrisy” and his lawyers immediately announced they would appeal. Nevertheless, according to consistent reports in the US media, the ex-president must deposit the money – plus interest – or some form of security within 30 days. If he doesn’t comply, he could face property seizure, New York Attorney General Letitia James said. (SDA)
