The Islamists’ Supreme Court announced this on Monday. The suspect had previously been convicted of murder. Just last week, two men also accused of murder were executed in the central province of Ghasni.

According to Taliban officials, the execution took place on Monday at a football stadium in the presence of local residents. The ruling was made in accordance with Islamic jurisprudence, which stipulates that the family of a murdered person can take revenge.

When they took power again in August 2021, amid the chaotic withdrawal of international troops from the country, the Islamist Taliban promised a more moderate course. However, they have repeatedly carried out public punishments, now including a total of five executions.

The United Nations and human rights organizations such as Amnesty International have sharply criticized the Taliban for this and called on them to stop such practices. During the first Taliban regime from 1996 to 2001, public floggings, amputations and stonings were regularly carried out. (saw/sda/dpa)
