A five-year-old boy is said to have lit a lighter in a refugee shelter in Nördlingen, Bavaria, sparking a devastating fire. A 64-year-old resident collapsed to his death during the evacuation on Sunday without being directly affected by the fire, the Schwaben Nord police station in Augsburg announced on Monday. Twelve residents were injured, some of whom were taken to hospital.
The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon, the fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire and the rescue service treated the injured. According to the investigators’ initial investigation, the child allegedly played with the lighter in his apartment at the facility. The building caught fire and the fire spread to adjacent apartments.
Fire investigators want to continue their work on the scene
The injured had suffered smoke inhalation or external injuries. The dead man was a resident of a neighboring building and, as things stand, was not in the burning building. Therefore, a medical cause independent of the fire is conceivable as the cause of death; an autopsy should clear this up.
Fire investigators planned to continue their work on site on Monday. The fire has made the building uninhabitable. (AFP/jmh)
