Democrats call for negotiations with Moscow

In a letter to the president released Monday, the 30 members of the US House of Representatives called for direct negotiations between the US and Russia to find a solution “acceptable to the people of Ukraine”.

In their letter, representatives of the left wing of Biden’s Democratic Party condemned Russia’s “scandalous and illegal invasion of Ukraine”. They also agreed with the White House that a peace settlement would depend on Ukraine’s agreement.

However, the group, led by MP Pramila Jayapa, emphasized that the multi-billion dollar US military aid to Ukraine carries a responsibility to “seriously explore all avenues” to end the conflict.

No willingness to dialogue in Moscow

State Department spokesman in Washington, Ned Price, said the US government had seen no indication from the Russian side that it was willing to engage in “diplomacy and dialogue”. The US provided military aid to Ukraine with the aim of putting it in “the strongest possible position” for possible negotiations with Russia.

In May, the US Congress launched a $40 billion aid package for Ukraine, which will fund massive military aid. The US provides the Ukrainian army with missile launchers, drones, artillery ammunition and vehicles.
