In the trial of the German suspect in the case of British girl Madeleine ‘Maddie’ McCann, who disappeared in Portugal in 2007, charges for other crimes were read out on Friday.
Christian B. is charged with three counts of rape and two counts of child sexual abuse, the representative of the public prosecutor’s office before the regional court in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony, said. B’s lawyer explained that the suspect exercised his right to remain silent.
The accusations have nothing to do with Maddie
The trial started a week ago. At that point, the trial was paused before the indictment was read due to the defense’s request for bias against a female lay judge. The court has now granted the request and the lay judge has been replaced.
47-year-old B. must answer for sexual offenses that he allegedly committed against five women and girls in Portugal between 2000 and 2017 in the Braunschweig proceedings. These allegations are not related to the Maddie case.
The defendant is currently in prison for rape in another case. The Braunschweig Public Prosecutor’s Office also considers B. a murder suspect in the case of Maddie, who disappeared from a holiday apartment in Portugal. That is why she has not yet filed a report. (Mrs)
