According to state media reports, Russian President Vladimir Putin, 71, conducted a test flight aboard a supersonic bomber capable of carrying nuclear warheads. State television on Thursday showed images of the Tu-160M fighter plane taking off from an aircraft manufacturer’s runway in Kazan, central Russia.
“This is really a new machine, new in many ways. It is easier to use. This can be seen even with the naked, untrained eye,” Putin told a group of journalists after landing.
State news agencies reported that Putin spent 30 minutes aboard the strategic bomber, which is part of Russia’s nuclear arsenal. It is a modernized version of an aircraft designed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
The apparent show of force comes just two days before the second anniversary of Russia’s offensive in Ukraine. (AFP)
