How do you compare apples with oranges? Former US President Donald Trump (77) shows the way: he spoke to a live audience with Fox News presenter Laura Ingraham and managed to draw parallels between his legal proceedings and Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny († 47).
«Navalny is a very sad situation. “He’s very brave, he was a very brave man,” Trump said. He would have been better off if he had not gone back to his country. And then he made an absurd comparison with himself: “It’s terrible, but it also happens in our country. “I’ve been impeached four times… all because of being in politics,” Trump said.
“A form of fascism”
Ingraham had just spoken to him about the $355 million fine he had to pay in the New York fraud case. Trump continued: “It’s a form of Navalny. It is a form of communism, of fascism.” Trump has not mentioned Russian President Vladimir Putin (71) once.
When Ingraham asked him if he expected to become a potential “political prisoner” like Navalny for the rest of his life, Trump was dodged in his usual manner. “If I lost at the polls, they wouldn’t even talk about me and I wouldn’t have any legal fees. If I was gone, I think – even though they hate me so much, I think if I was gone, they’d still say, ‘Let’s go after this guy, we can’t stand this guy.’
The US imposes new sanctions
According to Russian information, Alexei Navalny died on Friday in the ‘Polarwolf’ prison camp. The background to his death remains unclear: Russia does not want to release the body for another two weeks. The reason is “chemical research”. Navalny’s widow thinks Russia wants to cover up the traces of a poisoning.
The US will impose further sanctions on Russia after Navalny’s death. Details will be announced on Friday. (neo)
