Coco Cay instead of Miami. Or Half Moon Cay instead of Bahamas. Cruise ships are increasingly heading to their own private islands and private resorts instead of classic coastal metropolises. The reason: the new mega ships are too big for the old ports. In addition, there are increasing restrictions on luxury liners in several cities around the world due to environmental concerns.

So what do cruise giants like Royal Caribbean and Co. do? They buy entire islands or lots of land and convert them into luxury resorts! The cruise industry simply creates its own destinations, the advantage: long-term planning security and new revenue streams thanks to additional offers on private islands and private resorts.

Pompous project on Grand Bahama in detail

The Carnival Cruise Line is now building its own top resort on the island of Grand Bahama. Celebration Key is expected to open in July 2025. Cost of the project: $500 million.

According to the cruise line, there will be an area for families and an enclosed private club for adults only. Children will enjoy a huge freshwater lagoon, a water playground, two slides and sports fields. Adults can look forward to an infinity pool and a bar with a DJ. There is also a shopping center available for guests.

Up to 2 million guests are expected to attend Celebration Key each year. In the future, so-called cable cars and several water parks are planned for the more adventurous people. You can visit Celebration Key from Miami for three days for just $220. The Carnival Cruise Line hopes to generate additional revenue through paid excursions at the private resort.

The trend toward private islands and private resorts in the cruise industry is controversial. Environmental organizations around the world criticize the enormous consumption of resources in the construction of luxury destinations. The shipping companies around Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line will not let this stop them. The next private island for cruise ships is definitely coming.
