In Thailand, a wild tiger wandered into a village and caused panic among the population. Rangers have now managed to catch the three-year-old big cat in Kamphaeng Phet province with a trap, the Bangkok Post newspaper reported, citing the responsible authorities.

With fewer than 200 specimens left in the wild in Thailand, such encounters are rare. It is said that the animal was injured in its left leg and was extremely thin. Vets anesthetized it to take it to a wildlife park. The tiger will be treated and cared for there before being released back into the Huai Kha Khaeng nature reserve – far away from villages and people – in about two months.

Thailand is considered the center of the range of the Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti). The subspecies is classified as critically endangered. Poaching, illegal trade and habitat loss have particularly affected the population. However, in recent years the numbers in Thailand’s forests have increased again: last year authorities estimated there were 189 – twice as many as in 2014. (SDA)
