Women stay just as healthy as men by exercising less. These are the results of a new study.

Men achieved a maximum reduction in the risk of death when they did about 300 minutes of exercise per week. Women needed just 140 minutes, the group led by Martha Gulati of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles (US state of California) and Hongwei Ji of Tsinghua University in Beijing reported in the journal “Journal of the American College of Cardiology ”(JACC») writes.

“Women lag behind men when it comes to meaningful exercise,” Gulati said in a statement from her institution.

Sports relevant to cardiovascular disease

She and her colleagues wanted to know what effects exercise has on health and used a national database, the National Health Interview Survey. The 412,413 adults selected from this, 55 percent of whom were women, provided information in the survey via a questionnaire about the type and extent of their sporting activity per week. During the more than twenty-year study period, almost 40,000 participants died, including 11,670 from cardiovascular disease.

The researchers now determined to what extent the risk of death was reduced by exercise. Regular exercise during leisure time reduced this risk by an average of 15 percent for men and 24 percent for women – each time compared to people who did not exercise.

Differentiate exercise recommendations by gender

In cardiovascular disease, the reduction through exercise is 14 percent in men and 36 percent in women. The difference was also large for sports exercises that strengthen the muscles: regular strength training reduced the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 11 percent in men and by 30 percent in women.

When men exercised very intensively for 110 minutes per week, their risk of death fell by 19 percent. Women reached this value after just 57 minutes of intensive training. The result is no surprise for Kuno Hottenrott of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. “I have been advocating for some time that sports recommendations in health guidelines should be more differentiated by gender and age,” the sports scientist emphasizes.
