Twelve suspects were killed in a shootout between soldiers and suspected criminals in northeastern Mexico. The suspected gang members attacked the army near the town of Miguel Alemán in Tamaulipas state, which borders the US, the local security authority said on Monday evening (local time). Weapons and ammunition were seized after the shooting.

In Tamaulipas, the Gulf Cartel and the Northeast Cartel, among others, are involved in drug trafficking, migrant kidnapping and protection fraud. Bloody incidents have been taking place there repeatedly for years. In March 2023, four American citizens were kidnapped in the border city of Matamoros. Two were later found dead and the other two alive. As a result of the so-called drug war, more than 30,000 people were killed in Mexico, a country with 126 million inhabitants, in 2023 – almost 84 people per day. (sda/dpa)
