Desperation in Ukraine is growing. The troops are exhausted, the Russian troops are advancing to the front. If Ukraine does not quickly obtain full NATO membership, it will have no choice but to develop or otherwise maintain a nuclear arsenal. Ukrainian MP Alexei Goncharenko said this in Telegram on Sunday.

“I will say it again directly and openly,” Goncharenko wrote. “I support the return of nuclear weapons to Ukraine. I believe this is our only chance to survive.”

After the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russian nuclear weapons remained in the former Soviet republic. However, Kiev has never had control over it. In 1994, Moscow withdrew all nuclear weapons from its southern neighbor under an agreement on security guarantees.

“A nuclear state is fighting us”

On X, Goncharenko continued his request. The lesson everyone could learn is that Russia is ignoring all security agreements and obligations.

“A nuclear state is fighting us,” Goncharenko said. “So we either become a NATO member, an ally of nuclear states, or we have to work to restore our nuclear potential.”

“We don’t need a thousand. We need twenty.”

Now Ukraine needs nuclear weapons again, Goncharenko said: “If NATO does not want to include us in the alliance, that means we have to build nuclear missiles ourselves. We don’t need a thousand, but twenty.”

The politician does not comment on how he would use these twenty nuclear warheads. He also gave no information on how exactly he expects Kiev to acquire nuclear weapons.

Blinken avoided the subject

Goncharenko asked US Secretary of State Antony Blinken (61) about the subject on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference. What other options does Kiev have against Moscow, other than “joining NATO,” allying with a “nuclear power,” or “restoring our nuclear potential”?

Blinken had avoided the question, which is why Goncharenko now asked it again on Telegram: he would now say it directly and openly again, he wrote. He supports the return of nuclear weapons to Ukraine. He believes this is the only option for Ukraine’s survival.

Will Kiev be sanctioned for this? “We will put up with them,” Goncharenko says. “There is no other way out.”
