The “dirtiest man in the world” has died: Amu Haji is said to have not washed in over 60 years, setting an unofficial world record. He died on Sunday in his village in the southern Iranian province of Fars, state news agency IRNA reported on Tuesday. He was 94 years old.

According to Irna, Amui Haji was convinced that cleanliness “makes him sick”. However, a few months ago, neighbors from his village of Dejgah led him into a wet room and allowed him to bathe for the first time in decades, the agency reports.

The villager’s fear of any kind of personal hygiene, living alone, was the subject of a short documentary entitled, “The Strange Life of Amu Haji”.

Rare passion for smoking manure

The Swiss tabloid “20min” reported in 2014 about Amu Hajji: Smoking animal manure was said to have been part of his unconventional lifestyle. He would have used a sewer pipe that has been converted into a whistle.

He would always have drunk brackish water from an old oil can and eaten rotting carrion – porcupines were his favourite. He had no address. Instead, he would usually have slept in a hole in the ground.

Hajji is said to have voluntarily decided to leave the common customs and norms. Earlier in his life he had experienced several blows of fate, reports “Bild Der Frau”. Amu Hajji himself has never confirmed this.
