In the first eight months of the year, arrivals rose 122 percent compared to the same period last year to about 19 million guests, the “Kathimerini” newspaper reported Tuesday, citing an investigation by the Greek National Bank.
More Germans also traveled to Hellas – their numbers increased by 89 percent to 2.9 million. Travel alone from Russia fell by 71 percent due to the war in Ukraine and the resulting sanctions imposed by Russia.
According to the previous figures for the first eight months, 2022 should be the second best tourist year for Greece in general. In the record year 2019 – the last season before the outbreak of the corona pandemic – 33 million people went on holiday in the southern European country.
The guests spent more this year: their expenses increased by more than 11 percent compared to the same period last year and at the end of August the turnover amounted to 12.7 billion euros.
