It has been almost two years since Russia began its war of aggression against Ukraine. And there is still no end in sight: Russian forces are constantly trying to control more areas of Ukraine with artillery fire, air strikes and ground troops. While the Kremlin tries to justify its actions with the same old story, a certain war fatigue seems to be spreading among the Russian population.
At least behind closed doors, according to research by the Levada Center. Considered the only opinion research institute independent of the Russian state or state subsidies, it conducted two surveys in November and December each involving around 1,600 participants from all 50 regions of the country.
The pollsters wanted to know, among other things, how life has changed for the Russian people since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022. The results of the surveys were published in the past two weeks. We have listed the most important results:
Presidential elections
Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to be re-elected in mid-March. With no real opposition figures taking part in the vote, it is considered a sham election outside Russia and Putin is almost certain to win. The current Lewada research leaves little doubt about this.
Ukrainian war
Russia has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine for almost two years. A British analysis of Internet search terms used by Russians showed in May 2023 that “enthusiasm for the war is limited” and that “tacit rejection” has increased. everyday life
