The Basel region was supposed to be the host canton in 2020, but the visit had to be postponed due to the corona pandemic. About 350 guests from Basel will now travel to Vatican City together with 100 members of the church choir and brass band.
According to the communiqué, the total cost for the guest appearance in Basel is approximately 200,000 francs, of which 80,000 francs will be financed by the canton, 30,000 francs from the Swisslos fund and 90,000 francs by the Roman Catholic regional church.
However, the Basel region is not yet particularly surveillance-friendly. In December 2022, the district administrator rejected a government-requested contribution of 50,000 francs for the construction of new barracks for the Pontifical Swiss Guard. (SDA)
