A heavy snowstorm has led to school closures and numerous flight cancellations in the northeastern United States. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), it could be the strongest storm in two years.
People are desperately trying to get around in the snow, as several posts on social media show. Since dawn, some parts of New York have fallen between two and three inches of new snow per hour, the NWS said. Due to the snowfall, schools in the metropolis had to close. Public transport was expanded after the population was asked to avoid private car journeys. In total, 10 to 20 centimeters of fresh snow and wind gusts of up to 64 kilometers per hour were expected.
New York Mayor Eric Adams (63) addressed the citizens of his city with a video message on X: “Avoid unnecessary travel. If you have to travel, use local transport.”
More than 1,220 flights were canceled in the New York metropolitan area on Tuesday, according to the website Flight Aware. At New York’s La Guardia domestic airport, 43 percent of all connections were canceled, and there were also massive disruptions at JFK International Airport and Newark Airport in neighboring New Jersey. The photos show the runways covered in white flakes.
Many rural areas were cut off from the outside world by the masses of snow. As the snow continued to fall, snow plows tried to clear the streets. Nearly 13 inches of fresh snow fell in the community of Hampton Township, New Jersey, according to meteorologists.
Over three feet of snow fell in northern and western New York state at Christmas 2022. Dozens of people were killed, especially in the city of Buffalo on the Canadian border. Extreme and unpredictable winter and summer weather events have increased in recent years in the United States, as in the rest of the world. Experts are particularly surprised that snowstorms are becoming more common in low-lying areas. (AFP/a)
