A similar motion by the Conservatives was narrowly passed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday by 214 votes to 213.
Democrats had condemned Republican efforts to oust Mayorkas as politically motivated. The approach was also not without controversy among Republicans; That is why several conservative MPs voted against the so-called impeachment last Tuesday.
Many legal experts believe that the conditions for impeachment proceedings against the minister responsible for border protection do not exist.
Dispute over borders
Republicans accuse Mayorkas of “intentionally” creating a crisis at the U.S. border with Mexico through “gross incompetence” and a “year-long refusal to enforce laws passed by Congress.” The Secretary of Homeland Security is also alleged to have lied to Congress.
It is the first impeachment trial of a US minister since 1876.
However, Mayorkas’s impeachment is considered impossible: Democrats have the majority in the Senate, where the impeachment trial will take place. It is unlikely that the two-thirds majority needed for removal will ever reach the House of Lords.
Border protection and immigration policy are among the most contentious domestic policy issues in the United States – and are also a major election issue. The arrival of numerous refugees and migrants, mainly from South and Central America, at the Mexico-US border has been posing enormous challenges to US authorities for years. Republicans accuse Biden and his Democrats of allowing hundreds of thousands of foreigners to enter the country illegally. (AFP)
