The Israeli government has called on UN agencies working in the region to help evacuate civilians from the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. “We urgently call on UN agencies to cooperate with Israeli efforts to (…) evacuate civilians from the combat zone,” government spokesman Eilon Levi said on Monday.

Everything that happens in the southern part of the region on the border with Egypt must take place with full respect for the protection of the civilian population, UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said in New York on Monday. “We will not participate in the displacement of people.”

In addition, the spokesperson for UN Secretary General António Guterres wondered whether there were safe havens in other parts of the Gaza Strip – also because many unexploded bombs posed a danger there: “You cannot send people back to areas littered with unexploded ordnance. , not to mention the fact that there is a lack of accommodation there.”

The plan for a military offensive has been met with strong criticism

In the war against the Islamist Hamas, Israel is currently preparing for a military offensive in the city bordering Egypt. For this purpose, the military must develop plans that also provide for the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of civilians seeking protection in a very small space. The planned project in the overcrowded city was met with strong international criticism.

Hamas terrorists want to use Palestinian civilians in Rafah as “human shields,” government spokesman Eilon Levi said on Monday. Therefore, they must be brought to safety before the army begins its offensive. In his address to the UN agencies whose help Israel demands, he said: “Don’t say it’s not possible. Work with us and find out!” (SDA)
