Two people on board the plane were killed when a private jet made an emergency landing on a highway in the US state of Florida.

The Bombardier Challenger 600 plane with five people on board crashed on Interstate 75 near the city of Naples on Friday afternoon, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced in the short message service X.

Malfunction of both engines

The plane, which took off from Ohio State, was actually planning to land at Naples Airport on the west coast of Florida. Two minutes before the scheduled landing, the pilot reported to air traffic controllers that both engines had failed and requested permission to make an emergency landing, according to airport spokesman Robin King. The pilot then stated that he would not make the runway – “and attempted to land on I-75.”

Fireball

Three people on board the plane survived the emergency landing, while two others were killed when the plane hit, police said. Local media showed videos of the private jet bursting into flames on the side of the highway and thick black smoke.

Several nearby houses caught fire. It was initially unclear whether the plane also hit cars. Authorities began investigating. (SDA)
