Warning for Android users: the PDF app may cost you your account information

Thousands of apps are downloaded from the Google Play Store every day. Nobody thinks anything bad about it. Until the shock comes. The app is installed, as well as its add-on, and suddenly the bank account is empty.

Android users are currently particularly affected by this deception, warns the Internet portal Watchlist. PDF readers and PDF viewer apps in particular have apparently become targets of fraudsters. You should be extra careful if you are asked to download a so-called add-on after the installation is complete.

Add-ons are additional features that users can usually download directly from the newly installed app. They often promise an optimized user experience. In this case, installation is mandatory for a functioning app.

Be careful with Anatsa

It is precisely these add-ons that outsmart the Google Play Store’s security measures – and the malware is on the mobile phone. Hence the name Trojan. Right now the bad thing is the Trojan “Anatsa”. It starts recording keystrokes using a keylogger, obtaining sensitive information such as banking details, login details and passwords. This means that the next time the victim logs into e-banking, he or she is threatened with finding a gaping void in their account.

If you suspect that a Trojan horse is wreaking havoc on your phone, you should definitely do the following:

• Have your smartphone checked with security software. These detect and can remove Anatsa and similar malware.
• Then delete the app immediately.
• Be sure to report the app in the Play Store. This can remove dangerous apps and protect other users.
• Report it to the police and change any passwords immediately.
• If necessary, have bank accounts blocked.

As a preventative measure, you should always read reviews from other users before downloading an app.
