Scottish Health Minister Michael Matheson (53) is resigning. The reason is a five-figure roaming bill he has to pay. His children are said to have used his business tablet for private purposes.
Watched football matches
Relaxing holidays in Morocco for the Matheson family. The father of the Minister of Family and Health has his official tablet with him. It turns out that it was also used a lot during the holidays. In the end there was a roaming bill for about 12,000 francs. His sons used his work tablet to watch football, Spiegel reports. An investigation was subsequently announced in parliament.
Although the results of the investigation are not yet available, the Scottish Health Minister will now announce his resignation on X. As he explains in the two-page document, Scotland’s National Health Service needs major reforms to create a sustainable healthcare system. “It is best for me and for the government that I resign now to ensure that this incident does not become a distraction to the parliamentary agenda,” he continued.
“Wish only the best”
Matheson has previously faced sharp criticism. His handling of the incident left much to be desired. In the beginning, the politician even denied that he used his work tablet privately, writes the PA news agency. He later admitted that his children had used the SIM card.
Scottish Prime Minister Humza Yousaf accepted Matheson’s resignation. Although he has done an excellent job, it is in the interests of everyone involved that the Minister of Health resigns. “I wish you and your family nothing but the best.”
