Our German neighbors are organizing this year’s European Football Championship from June 14 to July 14. Germany expects half a million guests from Great Britain for this festival. The British government is apparently not concerned about this. The Foreign Office in London has now responded with a strange travel advice: “The beer in Germany can be stronger than in Britain. So drink responsibly, know your limits and respect local laws. If you drink too much you might not be able to get into the stadium.”

Violent reactions

Beer and football are without a doubt two of the most popular things on the island. It is logical that there will be reactions from the capital to this statement. Benjamin Elks, member of the TaxPayers Alliance, puts it very directly: “British people who go for a beer in Berlin do not need lectures from fun-loving civil servants. Minister, show these mothering diplomats the red card!”

Parliamentarians are also angry. Conservative MP Kevin Foster told the Sun: ‘At a time when there are so many serious issues affecting world peace, German beer should be the least of our Foreign Office’s worries. Fans traveling to Germany must respect the hosts and their laws, as we expect from them. But they don’t need nanny-like government advice.”

Alcohol can be a problem

The travel warning was only well-intentioned advice, but met with relatively little understanding. An alcohol ban is currently being discussed in Germany, which could have consequences for a match of the English national team. The match between Serbia and England (June 16, Gelsenkirchen) worries Peter Both, head of the Security/Operations Directorate in Gelsenkirchen.

He told the Mirror about the match: “We are discussing the possibility of banning alcohol in the stadium. And I’ll make no secret of it: from the perspective of someone in charge of security and the head of operations that day, I think that would be a good thing. We are also currently investigating to what extent we can enforce alcohol bans in public spaces. In Germany it is in principle allowed to drink alcohol on the street. But in large areas where fans gather in crowded areas, we want to ban that.”
