This case caused a stir in Germany last November: a 25-year-old man jumped from the balcony of his apartment in Dresden after a fire broke out there. His hands were in handcuffs, which were in turn tied to a bed frame. The 19-year-old girlfriend of the born Tunisian was soon suspected of starting the fire. She was arrested.
Now new details are coming to light. And the situation suddenly looks very different. Not the man should be the victim, but the fiery devil himself, writes the ‘Bild’. According to authorities, the man had repeatedly contradicted himself and therefore became increasingly the focus of the investigation. He is suspected of having staged everything.
Fire underestimated
Senior prosecutor Jürgen Schmidt confirmed this to “Bild”: “In carrying out this crime plan, he handcuffed himself to his bed in his apartment and set the mattress on fire.”
As the newspaper writes, he allegedly underestimated the fire and therefore jumped over the balcony.
The wife and mother of their daughter (1) have now been released from a women’s prison in Chemnitz. However, he is currently in custody.
Staging due to a custody dispute?
The background to his alleged crime was probably the dispute over his daughter. The 25-year-old wanted sole custody of the little one. With the crime he wanted to ensure that he could stay in Germany. The asylum seeker only had a tolerated status as a residence status. He is now charged with aggravated arson, false imprisonment and false suspicion.
The latest developments are a relief for the mother. “The innocent captivity has plunged my client into deep despair. We applaud the objective investigation by the police and the Public Prosecution Service,” said her lawyer Michael Sturm.
