Nine days in a row. 15 to 18 hours a day. This is what the working days of a cook on the Spanish dream island of Mallorca should have looked like. The alleged exploiters: two Swiss, aged 64 and 65, the Spanish police announced last weekend. Now the two have to face court for violations of labor law and for encouraging illegal immigration.
The woman involved explained to the officers how it could have come to this. In her homeland, which is still unknown, she was offered a job as a chef in Mallorca. The provider has paid for her airline tickets. But the stay on the holiday island turned out to be a disaster: one marathon team followed the other.
Two other employees discovered
The cook complained to the employer. The reaction of the two Swiss: They would have offered her 500 francs for a plane ticket back to their home country. When the woman declined the offer, one of the men turned violent. She ended up in the hospital.
According to the police, the two men should have known that the foreigner had neither a residence permit nor a work permit. In the course of the investigation, officers found two other employees. They stated that they worked irregularly in different houses in Mallorca as private chefs. These two also did not have a residence permit.
