About 457,000 people demonstrated in Germany against the right. Researchers count more shark attacks than in the previous year – 10 ended fatally in 2023

According to preliminary data, about half a million people demonstrated against the right across Germany last weekend.

The Interior Ministry spoke to 457,000 people at 128 events in Berlin on Monday. Due to the lack of figures from Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saarland, this is a provisional figure, a ministry spokesperson said.

In Berlin alone, more than 150,000 people gathered in the Reichstag building on Saturday to demonstrate for democracy and tolerance, according to police reports. The organizer even spoke of 300,000 participants. The Ministry of the Interior regularly bases its information on police estimates.

The nationwide wave of protests against the right has been going on for more than three weeks now. The reason was an investigation by media company Correctiv into a meeting between the radical right and individual politicians from the AfD, CDU and Values Union in Potsdam in November.

There, the former head of the right-wing extremist Identitarian Movement in Austria, Martin Sellner, said he spoke about the concept of so-called remigration. When right-wing extremists use the term, they usually mean that large numbers of people of foreign origin are forced to leave the country – even under duress.

On Monday people wanted to take to the streets again against the right. For example, around 7,000 participants were expected at a rally in Frankfurt am Main. (saw/sda/dpa)
