After a 23-year-old allegedly beat a Jewish student in Berlin until he was hospitalized, the ruling mayor responded.
“This vicious attack leaves me stunned,” Kai Wegner wrote on the X platform, formerly Twitter, on Monday. “Jewish people should feel safe everywhere in Berlin – including in our universities!”

A 23-year-old student is said to have met a 30-year-old Jewish fellow student in Berlin-Mitte on Saturday evening punched him in the face several times and eventually kicked the man as he lay on the ground as the police said. Citing previous investigations and statements, investigators said a dispute had preceded it. The 30-year-old expressed pro-Israeli views on social media, while the younger man was said to be pro-Palestinian.
Wegner also said he expects university management to take consistent action against anti-Semitism and actively intervene “if such developments come to light.” The head of government wished the injured person a recovery.
There was initially no new status with the police on Monday. A police spokeswoman said on Sunday that the suspect will be given the opportunity to comment on what happened. Officers are also evaluating possible evidence, it was said. The 23-year-old initially reportedly fled, but investigators later found him at home and searched the apartment. They confiscated the man’s mobile phone, among other things. State security is investigating. (rbu/sda/dpa)
