In May last year, a pigeon with a message in Chinese on its wing flew near the Mumbai harbour. For the local police the matter was clear: the bird had to be a Chinese spy. The animal was captured and handed over to Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals in Mumbai. The bird was supposed to be examined there and was ultimately held there for eight months, the Times of India reported.
The unusually long stay of the allegedly delinquent bird attracted the attention of animal protection organization PETA. After submitting a request to the Mumbai Police to be released “without further delay”, the animal was eventually released by the chief medical officer himself.
Threatening message addressed to the Prime Minister
The fate of the pigeon may seem strange, but it is certainly not the only criminal animal. In 2020, a pigeon in the Himalayan city of Kashmir was accused of espionage. She was also released. It turned out that it belonged to a Pakistani fisherman and had escaped.
Another pigeon also lost its freedom in 2016 when it was found with a threatening message against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (73). Hvaldimir, a beluga whale, is also part of the spy world. It was found off the coast of Norway in 2019. Equipped with a camera, he was believed to be a spy trained by the Russian military.
