Violence in the West Bank continues to increase. The human rights organization Amnesty International now warns against illegal actions.

Amnesty International has accused Israel of increasing “unlawful” violence against Palestinians in the West Bank and called for international justice to intervene.

Israeli forces “carried out unlawful killings, including by using unnecessary or disproportionate lethal force during protests and arrests, and denied medical care to the wounded,” the rights group said on Monday, citing its own investigation.

Violation of human rights standards

Amnesty International said it investigated four cases in October and November in which the Israeli military allegedly unlawfully used lethal force that “resulted in the unlawful killing of 20 Palestinians, including seven children.” Twelve people were interviewed for the investigation, including ten eyewitnesses, and videos and photos were examined.

“The increased unlawful lethal violence by Israeli forces against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank represents a shocking disregard for Palestinian life,” said Katja Müller-Fahlbusch, Middle East and North Africa expert at Amnesty International in Germany. “These unlawful killings are a blatant violation of international human rights standards.”

The International Criminal Court should open investigations

Müller-Fahlbusch called for judicial intervention: the International Criminal Court prosecutor should “investigate these killings and injuries as possible war crimes of intentional killing and intentional infliction of great suffering or serious injury.”

Israel has occupied the West Bank, where about three million Palestinians live, since 1967. Palestinians have fewer rights there than Jewish Israelis and are sometimes not allowed to go onto the streets. Since October 7, they have also suffered from increasing violence. According to the AFP news agency, more than 360 people have been killed in Israeli army operations and settler attacks in the West Bank in the past four months. (SDA/madam)
