Climate demonstrators blocked a Dutch highway on Saturday.

Climate activists have again blocked a highway through the city in The Hague. Police removed all demonstrators from the lanes on Saturday afternoon and took them away in buses. According to police, about a thousand people have been arrested.

As the public broadcaster NOS reported, clearing the blockade, which was banned by the mayor, took a long time because demonstrators had stuck to the asphalt. The city said the highway would be cleared and then reopened to traffic.

Climate minister asks for “a few days of patience”

Last year, the group Extinction Rebellion blocked the A12 highway in The Hague dozens of times to demand that the Netherlands abolish all government subsidies for fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.

The group accuses the government of reneging on its promise to eliminate tax breaks and other forms of subsidies for aviation, shipping, fossil fuel generation and oil production.

In just over a week, the incumbent climate minister Rob Jetten wants to submit proposals for the future cabinet to reduce subsidies. He asked Extinction Rebellion on Friday for ‘a few days of patience’. (SDA)
