On the night of January 27, unknown people broke into a zoo in La Londe-les-Maures, east of Marseille, and stole fourteen squirrel monkeys. The primates, native to Central and South America, are classified as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). On the black market, a monkey fetches several thousand euros.
The suspect was arrested after the Marseille zoo burglary, prosecutor Samuel Finielz said. Three of the stolen monkeys were also seized in the city. According to police, a monkey was found in the basement of the suspect’s home and two other monkeys were found in front of another house.
Police are now looking for the man’s possible accomplices and are asking for help in finding the eleven missing monkeys. Their life expectancy is “very limited without appropriate care,” police warned. (SDA)
