On Thursday evening, shortly after 7 p.m., drama erupted over Clearwater, Florida: the pilot of a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza V35 frantically announced that he was having an engine failure, shouted “Mayday, Mayday” – and ultimately crashed.
The plane crashes in a caravan park. After the impact, several caravans caught fire. A resident’s video shows flames and thick smoke rising from the settlement.
A large number of rescue workers are deployed to control the fire and save people. But for some, all help comes too late.
Several dead on the ground
Clearwater Fire Chief Scott Ehlers confirmed at a news conference that there had been multiple fatalities. The pilot is believed to be dead.
It is still unclear how many people were on board the plane and how many people were in the affected mobile homes. A total of four caravans were hit and destroyed.
Ehlers said at the news conference that the pilot had been in contact with Tampa air traffic control before the crash and reported problems.
“We couldn’t do anything, it was terrible”
Residents are shocked: “It’s sad and I pray for the people affected,” one person told a local TV station.
One resident said she felt the heat of the fire as she ran from her home across the street. “It was popping like propane tanks,” she said. “We couldn’t do anything, it was terrible.” (neo)
